3 Great Activities for a Creative Fall For All Ages

I think my favorite hashtag out of all of the ones I use on social media posts is #familiesthatcreatetogetherstaytogether. Runner up would be #friendsthatcreatetogetherstaytogether, followed by sisters who, brothers who, couples who...you get the idea.

As an artist, I wish I could say that creating with my family has always been a regular thing in my house, but it hasn't. We exercised our creativity through music and cooking more than we did with canvas and paint. I am actually a little embarrassed to admit that. But recently, our girls (now ages 18 and 22) and I have started creating together as a social thing. We try to spend one evening a month or every 6 weeks hanging out in the studio, brushes in hand, mostly not overthinking and talking about life. These are precious times and you don't have to have an art studio to enjoy creative fun with the ones you love!

Here are 3 favorites:

1. Pumpkin Carving, of course! This may be a no brainer, but you can make it a festive occasion with warm apple cider (or cold if we are still having "fake fall" in the south) and posting your finished pumpkins on social media for people to vote for their favorite. Or how about painting your pumpkins this year?

2. Make focaccia! Find a simple recipe and let the flat rectangle dough be your canvas arranging your toppings into a masterpiece or pattern. Bonus: You get to eat your beautiful creations! Don't forget to take pictures first.

3. Host a neighborhood Leaf or Stick Sculpture Contest! Here on the OBX that may mean shells and driftwood. Grill something delicious (did someone say oyster season?) and create a fall mocktail (adult versions also an option). Give every family or group a similar pile of raw materials, a few guidelines and tools (tape, string, scissors come to mind) and let them connect as they work as a team to build the tallest or the longest or strongest, or whatever qualifications you choose to measure by. Give prizes that inspire more fall creating like a small paint or art kit. We can help with that, if you like.

Let us know if you try any of these ideas! For absolute ease of creative fun, join us for a Family Fun Friday this fall or holiday season! Did we mention there is pizza close by?
