What is Mixed Media?
We have been talking about Mixed Media and promoting workshops and our online Mixed Media Club for years only to realize that most folks are not sure what mixed media really is. So, let's talk about it.
Mixed media, by definition, is using more than one type of media (paint, colored pencil, makers, etc.) in a single work of art, whether it is sculptural or two dimensional. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, a lesser known artist, began using mixed media techniques in the early 20th century.
There are 3 main types of mixed media in the 21st century: collage, assemblage and altered books. Just about every Gen X created a collage on poster board for a book report as a kid. And if you have ever made a vision board, you probably cut some pictures out of magazines and glued them to something. See, you are a mixed media artist! In our studio, most makers choose to take their collage up a notch to assemblage by adding 3D elements from our treasure trove of buttons, beads and everyday objects. Altered books involve using an old book as your canvas or creating a book from various materials and embellishing it.
We love mixed media because of how accessible and freeing it is! You can use common household materials, like fabric, magazines, ribbon, newspaper, paint, ink and glue. With some inspiration and a few learned techniques the possibilities are truly endless! So, is mixed media for you?
If you have been to many paint parties and you are ready to take your creating to the next level, mixed media might be for you! If you have a lot of scrapbook paper or other supplies from past creative endeavors, mixed media is a great way to use what you have! If you like gathering with friends and want to try something new, why not try mixed media?
Our Mixed Media Club makes it super easy to get started!
